Nassau County Police investigators responded to a report of a fire in a room at the Red Roof Inn on Dibblee Drive in East Garden City on Wednesday. Officers were directed to the room, at which point they found extensive fire damage to the floor of the room.

According to police, the investigation determined that the fire was started by gasoline being poured on the floor and set on fire. The investigation led police to Westbury resident Kristopher Kaufman, 39, who was found hiding in the shower in another room, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Kaufman was arrested and charged with second-degree arson. He was scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, Jan. 8 to be arraigned on the charge.
